Time Out Market took Lisbon's historic riverside market hall - the Mercado da Ribeira, trading under its iron roof since 1892 - and in 2014 refilled half of it with an edited anthology of the city's eating: dozens of counters chosen by the magazine's critics, from chef-driven stalls run by some of Portugal's best-known names to the essential classics of croquetes, custard tarts, garlic prawns and grilled fish, all served to long communal tables under the old trusses. The format solved the visitor's dilemma - taste widely without booking anywhere - and became a template exported to cities worldwide. The other half of the building keeps faith with the original: a working fruit, vegetable and flower market runs on weekday mornings, hung with the smell of coriander and the shouts of actual commerce.

What you actually see

  • The chef counters - name kitchens condensed to a single dish list.
  • The classics - croquetes, prawns, grilled fish and custard tarts.
  • The communal tables - the shared-bench theatre under iron trusses.
  • The morning market - the surviving produce hall next door.

When to go

Year-round and rain-proof; weekday off-peak hours eat best. The produce half runs weekday mornings - come before noon to see both faces of the building.

Honest expectations

Peak meal times are a polite fight for seats - send a scout ahead or eat at odd hours. Prices run tourist-firm, portions counter-sized, and the vibe is polished international rather than hidden-local. It is still the fastest good survey of Lisbon's plates under one roof.

Nearby

Cais do Sodre's riverfront, the Bica funicular and Chiado's cafes uphill.
