Nazare and Praia do Norte

Nazare rewrote surfing's map: offshore, Europe's largest submarine canyon runs deep toward the coast and funnels winter Atlantic swell straight onto Praia do Norte, stacking waves into moving cliffs of water - the ratified world record ride here measured 26.21 metres in 2020, and bigger waves since surfed await official measurement. The stage is perfect theatre: the red lighthouse on the 16th-century Fort of Sao Miguel Arcanjo stands on the headland between the wave arena and the calm town beach, its ramparts and surf exhibition putting spectators almost inside the spray on the giant days. Below, Nazare keeps its older identity - a fishing town of grilled sardines and drying racks on the sand, linked to the clifftop Sitio quarter by a funicular running since 1889.

October to March is giant season, but the true monsters depend on specific swells - forecast sites and tow-surf teams converge with a few days' notice. Summer shows a calm resort town with a fine beach and no drama.

Honest expectations

Seeing record waves is a lottery - many winter days are merely big, and flat days show just an empty beach. On announced swells the headland draws thousands, parking collapses and the wind up top is brutal - layers and patience required. Respect the barriers; the cliff edges and rogue waves are genuinely dangerous.
