Pepper Mountains

The Gory Pieprzowe - pepper mountains - are a low ridge of Cambrian shale running above the Vistula east of Sandomierz, and the name comes from the rock: the shale breaks down into small dark angular fragments that look like coarsely ground pepper and cover the slopes. It is around five hundred million years old, among the oldest rock exposed at the surface anywhere in Poland, and the ridge is one of the few places it can be seen. The slopes above the river are dry, south-facing and unstable, which has kept them open, and they carry a xerothermic flora - the reserve is best known for wild roses, with a very large number of species and hybrids recorded, unusual enough that botanists come for it specifically. The river is directly below and Sandomierz's old town, one of the better-preserved in Poland, is a short walk west along the bluff.

Things to know

The slopes are unstable and eroding - stay on the path. The reserve is small and the walk is short. There is no shade on the ridge. It is best combined with Sandomierz rather than visited alone.
