Moszna is the most extravagant house in Silesia and one of the strangest in Poland: a baroque core of the eighteenth century onto which the Tiele-Winckler family, who had made a fortune in coal and zinc, grafted a neo-Gothic east wing after a fire in 1896 and a neo-Renaissance west wing in 1912-1914, so the three styles sit end to end in one building. It is usually described as having ninety-nine turrets, a count that is repeated everywhere and that nobody has convincingly verified. There are around three hundred and sixty-five rooms. After 1945 it served as a sanatorium and then a neurological hospital, part of which still operates on the site, and the rest is a hotel, museum and events venue. The park around it runs to about a hundred hectares with rhododendrons and azaleas that flower in May, which is when most people come.

What you actually see

  • Three styles end to end - baroque core with neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance wings.
  • Ninety-nine turrets - the count everyone repeats and nobody has verified.
  • Around 365 rooms - a coal and zinc fortune spent on a country house.
  • A hundred-hectare park - rhododendrons and azaleas flowering in May.

When to go

May for the flowering park. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Part of the complex is still a working hospital and is not open. Interiors are seen on a guided route with limited rooms. May weekends are crowded. The village has almost no other services.

Nearby

Opole is thirty-five kilometres north-east; Gora Swietej Anny is west.
