Between about 3900 and 1600 BC, people mined banded flint here on an industrial scale: over four thousand shafts and pits across a strip of limestone several kilometres long, with galleries and chambers cut sideways from the shafts, worked with antler picks and stone hammers by miners who left the tools, the chalk marks and the soot of their lamps on the walls. The banded flint from Krzemionki was worked into axes traded several hundred kilometres in every direction. It is one of the best-preserved prehistoric mining landscapes in the world and was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2019. Visitors go down and walk a route of several hundred metres through the original galleries, which are low in places, with the working faces and pillar supports left as they were. Above ground there is a reconstructed Neolithic settlement and a museum, and the surrounding reserve preserves the shaft-and-spoil landscape.

What you actually see

  • Over four thousand shafts - a prehistoric mining field several kilometres long.
  • Original galleries - walked underground, with tool marks and lamp soot on the walls.
  • Banded flint - the stone traded hundreds of kilometres as axes.
  • A reconstructed settlement - Neolithic buildings above ground with the museum.

When to go
