Jasna Gora, Czestochowa

The Pauline monastery on Jasna Gora was founded in 1382 and grew into a walled complex on the hill above Czestochowa, with bastions from the seventeenth century still ringing it. Its chapel holds the icon of the Black Madonna, a dark panel painting of the Virgin with two scars on the cheek, kept behind a silver cover that is drawn back several times a day to a fanfare of trumpets and drums while the chapel is packed to the doors. A baroque basilica adjoins it, along with a treasury, a library and a tower of about a hundred metres that can be climbed in the warmer months.

• The basilica - the heavily decorated baroque church beside the chapel.
• The treasury and arsenal - votive gifts, vestments and objects given over six centuries.

When to go

April to October for the tower and the walls. The chapel is busiest around the unveilings and on Marian feast days, above all in the second half of August, when walking pilgrimages arrive in large groups and the hill is crowded from dawn. For a quiet visit, choose a weekday morning outside August and stay for one unveiling.

Honest expectations

This is a place of pilgrimage rather than a museum, and visitors who treat it as sightseeing feel out of place. The chapel is often too full to see the icon properly, and the view from behind is distant. The approach avenue is lined with stalls selling religious souvenirs at length. Czestochowa itself gives you little reason to stay.
