The Sokole Gory are a group of limestone hills south-east of Czestochowa, wooded in beech and pine, whose karst has produced something in the order of fifty caves and shafts - Jaskinia Studnisko, one of the deeper vertical systems in the Polish Jura at around seventy-five metres, is here, along with Olsztynska, Koralowa, Pod Sokolem and many smaller ones. Almost none of them are developed: there is no lighting, no walkway and no guide, and most are entered by scrambling or not at all, which makes this a caving area rather than a show-cave one. Above ground the reserve is quiet mixed forest with outcrops and marked trails, and the hills carry the ruined castle of Olsztyn on the edge, one of the Eagles' Nests, with a standing round tower and walls on a rock above the village. Bats hibernate in the caves and several are closed in winter for that reason.

What you actually see

  • About fifty caves - undeveloped, unlit and mostly entered by scrambling if at all.
  • Jaskinia Studnisko - a vertical system around seventy-five metres deep.
  • Quiet Jura forest - beech and pine over limestone with marked trails.
  • Olsztyn castle - a ruined Eagles' Nest with a round tower on the reserve's edge.

When to go

April to October; caves close in winter for hibernating bats. Half a day.

Honest expectations

These are not show caves - no lighting, no guides and real risk if you go in unequipped. Several are gated or closed for bats. Trails are marked but the terrain is uneven. Do not enter vertical systems without caving experience.

Nearby

Olsztyn castle is at the edge; Czestochowa is north-west.
