Frombork is a small town on the Vistula Lagoon, and almost everything worth the trip is inside one walled enclosure on the hill: a fourteenth century brick cathedral, a bishops' palace, a belfry and the fortifications around them. Nicolaus Copernicus lived here as a canon for the best part of thirty years and completed his work on the movement of the heavens in these buildings; his remains were identified and reburied under the cathedral floor in 2010. The cathedral organ is a large baroque instrument played at short recitals through the summer. In the belfry, a Foucault pendulum swings under the roof and a small planetarium runs shows.

What you actually see

  • The cathedral - brick Gothic with a baroque organ and Copernicus buried under the floor.
  • The Radziejowski Tower - the Foucault pendulum, the planetarium and the view from the top.
  • The Copernicus museum - instruments, early editions and the astronomer's working life in the old palace.
  • The walls - the enclosure, gate and bastions above the lagoon shore.

When to go

May to September, when the organ recitals run several times a day and the tower is open. The lagoon side is exposed and windy, so a calm day helps. Out of season the complex keeps short hours and some parts shut altogether. Recital times are posted at the gate and are worth planning the visit around.

Honest expectations

Frombork is remote, and public transport from the nearest cities is slow and infrequent. The town outside the walls is very small with limited places to eat. Tickets are split across four or five separate attractions and add up. The organ recitals are brief, perhaps twenty minutes, and the cathedral is cold even in July.

Nearby

The Vistula Lagoon shore, the town of Elblag and the inclined-plane canal to the south.
