Vistula Spit

The Vistula Spit is a bar of sand about seventy kilometres long, of which the western half is Polish, separating the Vistula Lagoon from the Baltic - a few hundred metres to just under two kilometres wide, covered in pine planted from the eighteenth century to stabilise dunes that were burying villages, with sea on one side and shallow brackish lagoon on the other. Krynica Morska is the resort. The recent change is the canal: a shipping channel through the spit at Skowronki, opened in 2022, giving Polish ports on the lagoon direct access to the Baltic without passing through the Strait of Baltiysk, and it was contested throughout on cost and on environmental grounds - the spit is a Natura 2000 site and the cut goes through it. A rotating bridge carries the road over it. Beaches on the sea side are wide and quiet away from the resort; the lagoon side has bird reserves.

History

Until the 13th century the spit had navigable straits in the middle, giving Elbing, today Elbląg, direct access to the Baltic, and their natural closing in the late 13th century reduced Elbing's importance as a seaport and helped Gdańsk rise. The spit, about 70 km long and up to 1.8 km wide, was long home to the Kursenieki, a Baltic people whose settlements in 1649 still reached from Memel to Gdańsk (Wikipedia, Vistula Spit).

Good to know

The canal remains locally contested and the environmental case against it was not resolved by building it. July and August fill Krynica Morska and the single road. The sea is cold. Beaches away from the resort have no facilities.
