The Biebrza is the largest national park in Poland and one of the last big river marshes left in Europe, a flat valley of sedge, peat bog, willow scrub and slow water that floods every spring and stays wet for most of the year. Its reputation rests on wildlife rather than scenery. Elk are genuinely common here and are seen from the roads at dawn, and the marsh is one of the main breeding grounds for the aquatic warbler, which brings birdwatchers from across Europe. Access is by boardwalk, by a handful of gravel roads with observation towers, and by kayak down the river itself, which winds for well over a hundred kilometres.
What you actually see
- The Bagno Lawki boardwalk - a long raised walkway straight out into open marsh, the classic Biebrza approach.
- Elk at dawn - the animals feed in the open early and late, and the roadside pull ins are the usual place to watch.
- The spring flood - snowmelt turns the valley floor into a shallow sheet of water covering many square kilometres.
- The river by kayak - a slow, meandering paddle with no rapids and campsites spaced along the bank.
When to go
Late April and May are the reason people come: the flood is out, displaying birds are everywhere and elk are active. June is still good and drier underfoot. Midsummer is quiet and hot with tall vegetation blocking views, and autumn brings migrating geese. Dawn and the last hour of light are worth far more here than the middle of the day.
Honest expectations
The mosquitoes are severe from May onwards and repellent alone is not enough, so long sleeves are standard. Much of the ground is genuinely wet and rubber boots are normal kit. The landscape is flat and subtle, and visitors expecting dramatic scenery are often disappointed. Facilities are thin, signage is mostly in Polish, and without binoculars there is not much to see.
Nearby
The Narew marshes lie just south, and the wooden villages and open country of Podlasie surround the park.
