The Museum of Agriculture at Ciechanowiec occupies a nineteenth-century palace and its park and is one of the largest institutions of its kind in Poland, combining a conventional museum of farming technology - ploughs, threshers, tractors, dairy and milling equipment - with an open-air section of some fifty rural buildings from Podlasie and Mazovia. It also runs specialist collections that are unusual: a museum of beekeeping with a large group of carved log hives made in the shape of figures, saints and bears, which was a regional practice; a bread museum; a collection of horse-drawn vehicles; and a veterinary medicine museum. Old Polish livestock breeds and crop varieties are kept and grown on site. There is a Polish stork village dimension to the area, and the park has old trees along the river. Events run through the summer on the farming calendar, with harvest and craft demonstrations.

What you actually see

  • Farming technology - ploughs, threshers, tractors and mill equipment across the halls.
  • Carved figure beehives - log hives shaped as saints, people and bears.
  • A fifty-building skansen - Podlasie and Mazovian rural architecture in the park.
  • Old breeds and crops - kept and grown on the site.

When to go

May to September. Half a day.

Honest expectations

The site is spread out and needs time. Some sections keep separate hours and close on Mondays. The town is remote from the main routes. Labelling is largely in Polish.

Nearby

The Nurzec and Bug valleys are around; Drohiczyn is south-west.
