Sehlabathebe National Park

Sehlabathebe sits where Lesotho tips over the Drakensberg escarpment - a high plateau of grassland, wind-carved sandstone arches and dark tarns at around 2,400 metres, protected since 1969 as the kingdom's first national park and inscribed with the Maloti-Drakensberg Park as a transboundary UNESCO site. Nothing here is crowded: rock pools mirror the Three Bushmen peaks, bearded vultures ride the escarpment edge, San rock art hides in overhangs, and the getting-there - hours of rough mountain road, or a full-day hike up from the South African side - filters visitors down to those who want exactly this much solitude.

When to go

October to April is the green season with hard afternoon thunderstorms; winter is bone-dry, bitter and occasionally snowed in - beautiful for the prepared, serious for anyone else. The park's weather changes by the hour in any month.

Honest expectations

Remote is the defining fact: fuel, food and help are all far away, roads require high clearance and patience, and the lodge-and-camp accommodation is basic - self-sufficiency is the entry fee. Trails are unmarked; guides from the villages know the art sites and the weather signs. This park rewards planning and punishes improvisation.
