Valugan faces the Pacific on Batan's eastern shore, and instead of sand it has boulders: thousands of them, andesite thrown out by Mount Iraya in past eruptions and worn by the ocean into smooth grey and white spheres and eggs, stacked from the treeline to the waterline. Walking on them is a slow, ankle-testing business, and the surf that shaped them arrives with force - this is an exposed coast where swimming is not on the agenda, and locals treat the wave line with respect. What the beach offers instead is texture and sound: the roar and rattle of water dragging back through stone, Iraya's cone rising directly behind, and sunrise straight out of the ocean, which is why most visits happen at dawn. The name comes from the Ivatan word for east. Nearby, the same coast carries the Chawa cave view deck and the road south toward Mahatao's church and the pasture hills.

What you actually see

  • The boulder field - smooth volcanic stones to the waterline.
  • Mount Iraya - the cone standing behind the shore.
  • The Pacific surf - heavy water working the stones.
  • Sunrise - straight out of the ocean on clear mornings.

When to go

March to May for calm weather; dawn for the light and the quiet. Swell is heavy in the amihan months and the typhoon season closes the island's plans entirely.

Honest expectations

Walking on wet boulders is genuinely slippery and rolls ankles - take it slowly. Swimming is not advisable here. No facilities; bring water.

Nearby

Vayang Rolling Hills, Racuh a Payaman and Basco's lighthouse are all a short ride away.
