Sumaguing Cave

Sumaguing is the largest of Sagada's caves and the one everybody does, though "doing" it is more athletic than the word suggests. Past the entrance chamber the walkway ends and the guiding begins: barefoot or in sandals for grip, visitors climb down wet flowstone slopes, wade and swim through cold pools, squeeze between boulders and rappel short drops on ropes while the guide's gas lamp throws the formations into relief - the King's Curtain, the Rice Terraces, the columns and cauliflower flowstone that give each chamber its nickname. The rock is polished slick by generations of feet and running water, and the guides' hands are the handrail. The harder option is the cave connection, which starts in Lumiang - a burial cave whose entrance is stacked with centuries-old wooden coffins - and threads underground for four to five hours to emerge in Sumaguing. Both are genuinely demanding; neither is a stroll.

• The flowstone chambers - lamp-lit curtains, columns and pools.
• The barefoot scramble - the polished rock that makes shoes useless.
• The cold pools - waist-to-chest wades and short swims.
• Lumiang's coffins - the burial cave at the connection's start.

When to go

November to April, when water levels are lowest; the caves close or shorten routes after heavy rain. Mornings beat the tour groups from Baguio.

Honest expectations

This is a physical, wet, muddy activity with real slip risk - not suitable for weak knees, vertigo or the unfit. Guides are compulsory and set the pace. Bring dry clothes and expect to be soaked.
