The Peñafrancia festival is the largest Marian devotion in the Philippines outside Manila, held at Naga each September for Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the patroness of the Bicol region, whose image dates to the eighteenth century. It runs for nine days of novena Masses, and the two processions at either end are what draw the crowds: the Traslación, when the image is carried on foot from its basilica to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, and the fluvial procession on the final Saturday, when it is returned by river - placed on a decorated barge and taken down the Naga River accompanied by hundreds of boats and by devotees on the banks, with the chant of Viva la Virgen carrying over the water. By tradition the image is carried and the barge crewed only by men, a custom that has been discussed and defended locally for years. Crowd numbers run into the hundreds of thousands and the city effectively stops.

What you actually see

  • The fluvial procession - the image taken downriver on a barge.
  • The Traslación - the walking procession that opens the festival.
  • The novena crowds - nine days of Masses at the basilica.
  • The riverbanks - devotees lining the water for the return.

When to go

The third week of September, with the fluvial procession on the final Saturday. Arrive several days early; Naga fills completely.

Honest expectations

Crowds are enormous and the riverbanks are packed and can be dangerous - there have been accidents in past years. Accommodation books out months ahead. Traffic in and around Naga stops during the processions.

Nearby

Mount Isarog Natural Park is above the city; the Caramoan peninsula and Camarines Sur's coast are east.
