National Museum of Fine Arts

The building was the legislature, a heavy neoclassical block that was wrecked and rebuilt, and it now holds the national collection of Philippine painting and sculpture. The room everyone comes for is the first: Juan Luna's Spoliarium of 1884, a canvas four metres high and over seven wide, hung alone at the end of the hall with a bench in front of it. Beyond that the galleries run through nineteenth-century academic portraiture, Amorsolo's lit rural scenes, the modernists of the mid-century and the abstraction that followed, plus restored ceiling paintings lifted from demolished buildings. Admission has been free since 2016, which changes who comes in.

When to go

Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays and public holidays. Weekday mornings are quiet; weekends bring school and family crowds, and free entry means the galleries can be loud. Two to three hours is enough. Combine with the natural history museum next door, which is a five-minute walk across the park.

Honest expectations

Air conditioning is inconsistent and some upper galleries are warm. Labelling is uneven, with strong panels in some rooms and bare name plates in others, and sections close for rehanging without notice. Outside the headline works the collection is a national survey rather than a world-class one. Bags go through a check and large ones must be left at the desk.
