Mount Halcon

Halcon has a reputation among Philippine climbers that precedes any description: nearly 2,600 metres, three to four days, dozens of river crossings, leech-heavy mossy forest, and a summit approach along a narrow ridge with drops on both sides. It sits in the mountains behind Baco in Oriental Mindoro, on the ancestral land of Mangyan communities whose guides lead every expedition, and the route climbs from farmland through rainforest to the mossy zone where the trail becomes a tunnel of roots and dripping vegetation. The knife-edge near the top - locally the Knife Edge or Monkey's Trail depending on the section - is the part climbers talk about afterwards, exposed and airy in cloud. Access has been restricted at times, with quotas, closed seasons and permit requirements introduced to protect the mountain and the watershed, so plans must start with the municipality rather than the trailhead. It is not a mountain to attempt casually or without local guides.

When to go

March to May, the driest window; the mountain is closed or impassable in the rainy months and quotas apply year-round. Permits take advance arrangement.

Honest expectations

This is a serious multi-day expedition - fitness, gear, porters and guides are all required, and leeches, rain and cold are guaranteed. Access rules change; confirm current status before travelling.
