Hulugan Falls

Hulugan drops something close to seventy metres in a single white column into a basin so enclosed that spray hangs in the air permanently and the light comes down green through the trees. It is the tallest of the Luisiana falls and the reason the barangay of San Salvador built a whole small tourism operation around it: registration desk, assigned guides, and a trail that leaves the village through coconut groves before turning down - steeply, over roots and clay steps cut into the slope, about thirty to forty minutes of descent that everyone remembers on the way back up. At the bottom the pool is shallow at the edges and deep under the fall, cold, and loud enough that groups shout at each other. The same trail system reaches two smaller falls, Talay and Hidden, which most guides string together into one circuit. Wet season doubles the volume and closes the trail after heavy rain.

When to go

November to May for a passable trail; the falls are biggest right after the rains but access closes when the river rises. Mornings before the afternoon storms.

Honest expectations

The climb back out is steep and slippery, and after rain it turns to clay slide - grip footwear matters. Guides are mandatory. Facilities are village-level; bring water and cash.
