Most of the writing systems used in the Philippines before the Spanish arrived died out under colonial rule, replaced by the Latin alphabet. Two survived in continuous use, both in Mindoro: the Hanunoo and Buhid Mangyan scripts, syllabic systems in which each character stands for a consonant-vowel pair, traditionally incised into bamboo with a knife rather than written with ink. Among the Hanunoo the script carries a specific social function - it is used for ambahan, seven-syllable poems of courtship, advice and farewell, cut into bamboo tubes and exchanged - and literacy in it remains reasonably widespread among adults, which is why UNESCO inscribed the scripts on its Memory of the World register in 1999. The Mangyan Heritage Center in Calapan holds collections, publications and ambahan recordings and is the appropriate first stop; upland communities are not a destination for casual visitors and are reached only through local arrangement and with consent.

What you actually see

  • The bamboo inscriptions - characters incised with a knife.
  • The ambahan poems - seven-syllable verses cut into tubes.
  • The heritage centre - collections and recordings at Calapan.
  • The living use - a pre-colonial script still read and written.

When to go

November to May for travel in Mindoro. The heritage centre keeps weekday office hours; anything beyond it needs arrangement well in advance.

Honest expectations

Mangyan communities are not a tourist attraction - visiting requires invitation and local intermediaries, and turning up unannounced is not appropriate. The heritage centre is the proper way to engage with the script.

Nearby

Calapan is the provincial capital and transport hub; Puerto Galera is on the northern coast.
