Candaba Wetlands

The Candaba swamp is a working landscape that turns into a bird spectacle every winter. Through the wet months the basin floods and farmers grow fish; as water recedes they plant watermelon and rice, and from around November the shallow pans fill with migratory birds arriving from the north - garganey and northern pintail in their thousands, tufted ducks, egrets, herons, whiskered terns and a long list of waders that has made the site a fixture of Philippine birding and a regular census point. Watching is done from the dikes: birders drive or walk out at first light, set up scopes on the embankments, and work the pans as the mist lifts, sometimes hiring a boat when levels are high. There is no visitor centre and no formal reserve infrastructure; access depends on local landowners and the barangay, which is why going with a guide who knows the current arrangements matters more here than at a national park.

When to go

November to March for the migration; dawn is the hour, before heat and disturbance. Numbers vary year to year with water levels and land use.

Honest expectations

This is private farmland, not a park - arrange access locally and respect it. Roads are dirt and impassable when wet. Bring binoculars or a scope; birds are distant across the pans.
