Basilica of Piat

The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Piat holds an image of the Virgin brought from Macau by Dominican missionaries in 1604 and installed at Piat in the following decades - a dark-complexioned Madonna, carved and clothed, known across the Cagayan Valley as the Nuestra Señora de Piat and credited by devotees with ending a drought that struck the region soon after her arrival. The devotion spread through the valley and remains one of the strongest in northern Luzon, drawing pilgrims from Cagayan, Isabela and the Cordillera provinces. The present church is a large brick building on a rise above the town with a wide plaza in front and a museum of ex-votos and devotional objects beside it. The feast at the start of July brings the Sambali festival, a dance performance recounting the conversion of the local Itawes and Malaueg peoples, and the town fills for it.

November to May for easier travel; early July for the feast and the Sambali festival, which is when the shrine is fullest and most interesting.

Things to know

It is a devotional site with regular Masses, so sightseeing waits. Piat is an hour from Tuguegarao on provincial roads. Facilities in town are limited outside the fiesta.

Nearby

The Callao Caves at Peñablanca and Tuguegarao are about an hour away; the Cagayan valley road runs south toward Isabela.
