In 1987 an intact Moche tomb was excavated at Sipán, inland from Chiclayo, and it turned out to hold the fully dressed burial of a ruler with hundreds of objects in gold, gilded copper, turquoise and shell. This museum was built to hold it. The building is a low red ramped block echoing a Moche platform, and the route runs from the top floor downwards, so visitors descend through the layers in the order the excavators uncovered them, ending at the reconstructed burial chamber with the ornaments arranged as they lay. Masks, back ornaments, rattles, nose pieces and beaded pectorals are shown at close range, and the workmanship, not the gold, is the thing.
What you actually see
- The reconstructed burial - the principal tomb rebuilt with its ornaments in position.
- The gold and turquoise work - masks, pectorals and ear ornaments at close range.
- The top-down route - the descent that mirrors the order of excavation.
- The building - a ramped red block shaped after a Moche platform.
When to go
Year-round; the coast is dry and the museum is the same in any season. It closes on one weekday, so check before travelling out from Chiclayo. Mornings are quieter than the mid-afternoon coach window. Two to three hours is realistic, and rushing it to fit Túcume into the same day is a common mistake.
Honest expectations
No photography at all is allowed and bags and phones go into lockers, which several visitors find heavier-handed than necessary. Labelling is largely in Spanish, and the English is patchy. Lighting is very low by design and some cases are genuinely hard to read. It is in Lambayeque, not Chiclayo, so add transport at both ends. The tomb site at Sipán itself is a separate trip and much thinner.
Nearby
Túcume, the Sicán museum in Ferreñafe and the excavation site at Sipán.
