Hans Heinrich Brüning came to Peru in 1875 as an engineer for a sugar estate and stayed four decades, recording the languages, customs and archaeology of the north coast, photographing extensively, and assembling a collection that the state bought in 1921 and which became the region's first archaeological museum. His photographs and his notes on Mochica, the coastal language then dying out, are as valuable as the objects. The museum holds Moche, Sicán, Chimú, Vicús and Inca material across the north coast sequence, and it was the institution Walter Alva directed when the Sipán discovery happened in 1987 - the finds were first brought here before the Royal Tombs museum was built next door to hold them. It remains a good general survey of the region, quieter and cheaper than its famous neighbour, and it is usually visited alongside it.

What you actually see

  • The Brüning collection - the founding holdings of a German engineer turned recorder.
  • The photographs - his documentation of north coast life around 1900.
  • The sequence - Moche, Sicán, Chimú, Vicús and Inca material together.
  • The Sipán link - the museum Alva directed when the tomb was found in 1987.
