Hito Tres Fronteras

The Hito Tres Fronteras stands on the Paraguayan bank where the Iguazu joins the Paraná, at the point where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet, and each of the three has put up its own obelisk painted in its national colours on its own bank, so that all three are visible from any of them. The Paraguayan side has been developed with a promenade, gardens, a viewpoint over the confluence and a light and water show in the evening, along with food stalls and a craft area. The rivers meet visibly, the Iguazu darker than the Paraná, and boat traffic and the bridges are part of the view. It is a short stop rather than a destination.

• The confluence - the Iguazu meeting the Parana below the point.
• The promenade - the developed walkway and gardens on the Paraguayan side.
• The evening show - the light and water display after dark.

When to go

Year round; late afternoon and evening for the light show and the cooler air. The site is a stop of an hour or two. Weekends bring local visitors and the stalls are busiest then.

Honest expectations

It is a viewpoint and a monument rather than a substantial site, and the visit is short. Ciudad del Este traffic is heavy. The light show runs on a schedule and not every evening. The confluence view is better from the Brazilian side.
