The aquarium in Koror is run by the Palau International Coral Reef Center, a research institution, and its tanks follow Palau's habitats in sequence from mangrove and seagrass through the lagoon to the outer reef and the deep, with the species that live in each. Giant clams, chambered nautilus and reef fish are among the displays. The research side of the centre works on coral and on giant clam culture. The centre was built with Japanese assistance and opened in 2001, and its research work covers reef monitoring across the region.

What you actually see

  • The habitat sequence - tanks running from mangrove out to the deep reef.
  • The giant clams - the species Palau has worked on culturing.
  • The chambered nautilus - the deep-water animal in the display.
  • The research centre - the working institution the aquarium belongs to.

When to go

Year round; the aquarium is indoors. It keeps set hours and closes on some days. Rainy days fill it.

Honest expectations

The aquarium is small and an hour or two covers it. Some tanks have been out of service at times. The entry fee is high for the size.

Nearby

Koror is around it, and the Rock Islands are south.
