Manthokha falls out of a side valley into the Indus basin in Kharmang district, dropping around fifty-five metres in a single sheet down a dark rock face into a pool. What has grown around it is characteristically Pakistani: a picnic ground with concrete platforms, tea stalls, and trout ponds where the fish are raised and cooked to order, so families drive out from Skardu for a day of sitting under the spray and eating fish. The setting is dry mountain country, so the sudden band of green around the stream is striking, with poplars and willows planted along the channel. The road in from the Skardu highway is short but rough. It is not a wilderness experience, and it is not meant to be: this is a valued local excursion, and understanding it as such makes it much more enjoyable.

What you actually see

  • The main fall - a single sheet of water around fifty-five metres high.
  • Trout ponds - fish raised on site and cooked at the stalls.
  • Picnic gardens - platforms and shaded seating along the stream.
  • The green strip - poplars and willows against the dry mountainsides.

When to go

May to September, with the strongest flow in early summer from snowmelt; by late season it thins. Weekends and holidays are extremely busy with local families. Mornings are quieter and cooler.

Honest expectations

The site is developed with concrete and stalls rather than left natural, and litter is a persistent problem in peak season. The access road is rough. Facilities are basic, and women travellers should expect the usual attention that a busy local picnic spot brings. It is a two-hour stop, not a destination.

Nearby

Skardu is the base; the Kharmang valley continues east along the Indus.
