Kargah Buddha

Cut into a rock face several metres above the ground in the Kargah valley, the figure is a standing Buddha roughly three metres high, carved in relief and generally dated to around the seventh century, when this part of the upper Indus was a Buddhist region on the routes between Central Asia and the subcontinent. Traces of a monastery and stupas were excavated nearby in the twentieth century, along with manuscripts, confirming a settled religious community here. Local tradition attaches a different story to the carving, telling of an ogress who was pinned to the cliff by a saint, and the figure is known in that telling as the Yakhshini. The setting is a narrow side valley with a stream, poplars and terraced fields, a short drive from Gilgit, and the carving is best seen in morning light when the relief catches the sun.

When to go

April to October; the valley is accessible year-round but winter is cold and the light is poor in the narrow valley. Morning light is best on the carving. It takes well under an hour, so it fits alongside other stops around Gilgit.

Honest expectations

The carving is high on the cliff and viewed from below, so detail is limited without binoculars or a long lens. There is little interpretation on site. The approach track is rough in places. It is a short stop rather than a destination in its own right.

Gilgit town is a short drive east; the Karakoram Highway runs north towards Hunza.
