Hopar Glacier

The Hopar or Hopper glacier, properly the Bualtar, is remarkable for how easy it is to reach: a paved road runs from the Hunza valley through Nagar to the Hopar villages, and the glacier lies directly below the rim, so visitors walk five minutes from the car park and look down onto a river of ice. It is a dark glacier, its surface covered in rock debris that gives it a black and grey appearance rather than white, curling between the terraced fields of the villages on one side and bare mountainsides on the other. Paths descend to the ice, and guided walks cross it towards the Barpu glacier and the pastures beyond, a rougher undertaking than it looks from above. The Hopar villages themselves are attractive, with stone houses, poplars and potato fields, and the Nagar side of the valley sees far fewer visitors than Hunza across the river.

When to go

May to October. In early summer meltwater streams the surface and the ice groans audibly; late season is quieter and duller in colour. Morning light is better into the glacier trench. The road is open most of the year but winter visits are cold and grey.

Honest expectations

A debris-covered glacier is not white and photogenic in the expected way, and some visitors find it underwhelming from the rim. Descending to the ice is steep, loose and genuinely hazardous without a guide; crevasses are real. The viewpoint has stalls and a small fee, and coach groups pass through at midday.
