Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings

The carvings at Mine Bay were cut between 1976 and 1980 by Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, then a master carver in his twenties, with a small team - not an ancient site, and the centre does not pretend otherwise. The main figure is Ngatoroirangi, the navigator and tohunga who in Te Arawa tradition guided the Te Arawa canoe to New Zealand and called down fire that created the Taupo volcanic field; the face is over ten metres high, with smaller figures of Celtic and Australian design alongside acknowledging the carver's own mixed descent. It was carved on a cliff that is only reachable by water and left deliberately without land access, so the only way to see it is a boat trip, a sailing charter or a kayak paddle of about an hour and a half each way from Taupo. Morning light hits the face best. The lake gets rough in wind and trips are cancelled accordingly.

When to go

October to April, in the morning for light on the face. Kayaking is a three-hour return paddle; boats are quicker. Wind cancels trips - the lake gets rough fast.

Practical notes

These are modern carvings from the late 1970s, which surprises visitors expecting antiquity. There is no land access at all. Kayaking is a real paddle, not a drift. Trips cancel in wind.
