Haleji was created in the Second World War as a water supply for troops in Karachi, and the shallow reed-edged lake that resulted turned out to be exceptional for birds: at its peak it recorded well over a hundred thousand wintering waterbirds and around two hundred species, including pelicans, flamingos, cormorants, herons, ibises, raptors and large concentrations of ducks. It became a Ramsar site and a famous name among birdwatchers in South Asia. Its condition has fluctuated badly since, with drying episodes, salinity problems, reed clearance and disputes over water supply reducing bird numbers substantially in some years, and conservation groups have campaigned repeatedly over its management. In a good winter it is still a remarkable place, with a track around part of the shore and viewing from the bunds. Marsh crocodiles are present in small numbers.

What you actually see

  • Wintering waterfowl - ducks, coots, pelicans and flamingos in season.
  • Reedbeds - fringing vegetation holding herons, ibises and bitterns.
  • Raptors - harriers and eagles hunting over the marsh.
  • The shore track - a route around part of the lake for viewing.

When to go

December to February is the peak of the winter bird season and the only period worth planning a trip around. Early morning is by far the best. Numbers vary hugely year to year with water conditions, so recent local reports are worth checking.

Honest expectations

The lake has declined from its historic reputation and in poor years the birding is thin; do not arrive expecting the numbers in older accounts. Facilities are minimal, with no hides and a basic rest house. Access tracks can be rough. Bring optics, water and patience.

Nearby

Thatta and Makli lie east; Karachi is an hour and a half west.
