Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur

Guru Nanak settled at Kartarpur on the bank of the Ravi around 1522, after his years of travelling, and spent his last eighteen years here farming and teaching, establishing the practices of communal work, shared kitchen and congregational worship that shaped Sikhism. He died here in 1539, and the shrine marks the site. The present complex is a large white marble structure with domes and a broad plaza, greatly expanded and rebuilt in recent years, set among fields with the river nearby; the older shrine had been repeatedly damaged by floods and rebuilt. A samadhi and a grave stand in the compound, reflecting the tradition that both Hindu and Muslim followers claimed his remains. A dedicated corridor was built to let pilgrims from across the border visit the shrine directly; it has been closed at times, so check whether it is open before planning a visit. History

After Guru Nanak's death a dispute over his chadar, his shawl, was settled by dividing it, the Muslims burying their half and the Hindus cremating theirs, and because the Ravi flooded the cremation site his son Baba Sri Chand moved the ashes to what is now Dera Baba Nanak. The main shrine building was built in 1925 with a gift from the Maharaja of Patiala, repaired in 1995 and fully restored in 2004, and in November 2018 the complex was expanded over 42 acres (Wikipedia, Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur).

When to go

October to March for comfortable weather. Anniversaries, especially Guru Nanak's birth in November, bring very large crowds. Ordinary days are quiet and the complex is largely empty, which suits the setting.

Practical notes

The complex is almost entirely new construction, and visitors expecting a small historic shrine will find a large modern one. Heads must be covered and shoes removed. Entry procedures and identification requirements can be strict; check current arrangements before travelling. Facilities in the surrounding area are minimal.
