Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur

Guru Nanak settled at Kartarpur on the bank of the Ravi around 1522, after his years of travelling, and spent his last eighteen years here farming and teaching, establishing the practices of communal work, shared kitchen and congregational worship that shaped Sikhism. He died here in 1539, and the shrine marks the site. The present complex is a large white marble structure with domes and a broad plaza, greatly expanded and rebuilt in recent years, set among fields with the river nearby; the older shrine had been repeatedly damaged by floods and rebuilt. A samadhi and a grave stand in the compound, reflecting the tradition that both Hindu and Muslim followers claimed his remains. A dedicated corridor allows pilgrims from across the border to visit the shrine directly, and it draws large numbers on anniversaries.

When to go

October to March for comfortable weather. Anniversaries, especially Guru Nanak's birth in November, bring very large crowds. Ordinary days are quiet and the complex is largely empty, which suits the setting.

Honest expectations

The complex is almost entirely new construction, and visitors expecting a small historic shrine will find a large modern one. Heads must be covered and shoes removed. Entry procedures and identification requirements can be strict; check current arrangements before travelling. Facilities in the surrounding area are minimal.
