Duqm Rock Garden

The rock garden at Duqm covers a stretch of desert north of the town where limestone has been eroded by wind and salt into shapes standing free of the ground: mushrooms, arches, fins and undercut blocks, some several metres high, over an area of several square kilometres. The formations were exposed as the softer surrounding rock weathered away, and the salt-laden wind off the sea has done much of the sculpting. A road loop, parking and paths have been laid out to make it a park, with some formations lit at night. It sits on the coast road at the edge of Duqm, a port and industrial town developed rapidly over the last two decades.

• Sculpted limestone - mushroom, arch and fin forms across the desert.

• The coastal setting - the sea a short distance east.
• Night lighting - the illuminated formations after dark.

When to go

November to March for the temperature; the central coast is very hot in summer. Early morning and late afternoon give the best shadows on the forms. The site is open at any time with no gate.

Honest expectations

The formations are spread out and much of the area is undeveloped desert. There is little shade and no facilities beyond parking. Duqm is an industrial port town with limited visitor appeal. Climbing on the formations damages them and is discouraged.
