The Valley of Stacked Stones does exactly what its name promises: across rolling pine-fringed meadows at about 2,400 metres, hundreds of rock formations rise in towers that appear deliberately piled - boulders balanced on boulders, some twenty metres tall, weathered from volcanic rock over millions of years into shapes local imagination has duly catalogued: the camel, the eagle, the kissing couple, the friar, the elephant. Trails loop through the main meadow and into quieter side valleys where the formations keep company with grazing sheep; horses amble the circuit for hire, and guides embroider the stones with legends of giants who left their games unfinished. The sierra's habitual mist is half the spectacle - mornings often begin with towers looming from white-out and clear by noon into hard blue light. Simple cabins, quesadilla stands and zip lines cluster at the entrance meadow, keeping the valley in the family-outing register the Puebla highlands do so well.
What you actually see
- The stacked towers - balanced stone stacks to twenty metres.
- The named stones - camels, eagles and couples in weathered rock.
- The meadows - pine-ringed pastures threading the formations.
- The mist theater - towers appearing and dissolving with the cloud.
When to go
Dry-season mornings give the clear-then-misty drama in the right order; summer greens the pastures but rains after midday. Weekdays leave whole meadows to the sheep.
Honest expectations
Trails are easy but the altitude and open sun still tax; facilities are rustic and cash-only. The far formations reward walking past the entrance cluster where most groups stop.
Nearby
Zacatlan's flower clock and canyon lie half an hour east; Chignahuapan's sphere workshops complete the sierra triangle.
