Storseterfossen

Storseterfossen falls about thirty metres over an overhang above Geiranger, and erosion has left a ledge behind the curtain wide enough to walk along, which is the reason people come: the path leads in behind the water and out the other side, with the fjord visible through the falling stream. The route starts at Westeras farm, which serves food in summer, and climbs about forty-five minutes on a marked track with some steep and rocky sections, gaining a few hundred metres with views down over Geiranger and the fjord. The final approach and the ledge itself are wet, with chains fixed on the rock, and spray soaks anyone crossing behind the fall.

When to go

June to September, when the path is clear and the farm is open; the ledge is dangerous in ice and the route is not maintained in winter. Flow is heaviest in early summer, which also makes the crossing wettest.

Before you go

Expect to get soaked crossing behind the fall, and to find the rock slippery with chains needed at the wet sections. The climb is steep in parts and takes longer than the distance suggests. Parking at the farm is limited and charged.
