Rampestreken

Rampestreken is a steel walkway that cantilevers out from the side of Nesaksla about 550 metres above Andalsnes, giving a view straight down onto the town, the Rauma river delta and the Romsdalsfjord, with the Trollveggen wall visible up the valley. It is reached by the Romsdalstrappa, a stairway of around two thousand stone steps built by Nepalese sherpa masons who have constructed many such paths in Norway, climbing from the edge of town in about an hour and a half. Since 2021 the Romsdalen gondola has offered an alternative, rising to a restaurant near the summit in a few minutes, with the ramp a short walk below the top station.

When to go

May to October for the stairway, which is icy and unsafe in winter; the gondola runs year-round with weather closures. Early morning avoids both the heat and the queue at the ramp.

Practical notes

The stairway is a hard continuous climb, and the descent is punishing on knees, which is why many walk up and ride down. The ramp is small and gets crowded when the gondola delivers groups. Wind and cloud are common at that height.
