Kjosfossen

Kjosfossen falls 225 metres beside the Flam Railway, and the train stops at a purpose-built platform so passengers can step out for five minutes into the noise and spray. During the summer season a performance accompanies it: a dancer in a red dress appears among the ruins on the rocks above, representing the Huldra, a seductive forest creature of Norwegian folklore who lures men into the mountains, while music plays over speakers. Whether this reads as charming or as theatre depends on the visitor. The waterfall itself is genuine and powerful, fed partly by the regulated water system that also drives a hydroelectric plant, so the flow is managed and higher during train hours in season.

When to go

May to September, when the Flam Railway runs its full schedule and the performance takes place; winter trains still stop but without the dancer and with less water. Early and late departures are less crowded.

Practical notes

The stop lasts about five minutes and every passenger gets out at once, so the platform is packed and photographs are difficult. Spray soaks cameras and clothing. The flow is regulated rather than natural, and the performance is unapologetically staged.
