Hunderfossen Family Park

Hunderfossen opened in 1984 and built itself around Norwegian folk material rather than imported characters: the entrance is dominated by a seated troll fourteen metres high, and the park includes a fairy-tale palace, an Eventyrslottet with scenes from Asbjornsen and Moe's collected tales, a troll cave, and rides mixed with the storytelling. It is aimed squarely at families with younger children rather than at thrill seekers, though there is a water park and a few faster rides. In winter part of the site becomes an ice hotel and a Christmas attraction. It sits beside the Hunderfossen bobsleigh track and the Lagen river, thirteen kilometres north of Lillehammer.

When to go

June to August for the full park, which is when almost everything operates; the season is short and much of the park closes outside it. The winter Christmas and ice hotel period runs separately from December.

Before you go

The season is brief and the park closes for most of the year. The folk tale content means little without knowing the stories, and signage is largely Norwegian. Prices are high for a family day.
