Bunad

The bunad is regional festive dress, and unlike folk costume in most of Europe it is genuinely current: a large proportion of Norwegians own one, and on 17 May, constitution day, the streets fill with them. There are several hundred recognised variants, differing by valley or district in cut, colour, embroidery and silver, some descended directly from surviving local dress and others reconstructed or designed in the twentieth century during a wave of national interest, which is a distinction taken seriously by specialists. Women's bunads carry silver brooches and buckles specific to their district; men's include waistcoats, knee breeches and knives. A complete outfit is expensive, often taking months to make and lasting a lifetime.

Practical notes

Bunads are personal formal dress, not costume, and photographing strangers closely is intrusive. Prices for a complete outfit run into thousands of euros, which surprises visitors who assume it is folkloric rather than living. Questions about which bunad is authentic are contested.
