Allemannsretten

Allemannsretten, everyman's right, is the customary freedom to move through uncultivated land, codified in the Outdoor Recreation Act of 1957. It allows anyone to walk, ski, cycle, ride and camp on utmark, uncultivated ground, regardless of who owns it; to pitch a tent for up to two nights in one place, or longer in the mountains and remote areas; to pick berries, mushrooms and wildflowers; and to swim and travel by boat. The limits are equally clear: tents must be at least 150 metres from any inhabited house or cabin, cultivated land is excluded, litter must be carried out, open fires are banned near forest between 15 April and 15 September, and permission is needed to camp longer or in groups.

When to go

May to September for camping and foraging, with berries ripening from July and mushrooms from August; the right applies year-round, and winter camping is legal but demands proper equipment.

Honest expectations

The right comes with real obligations, and heavy visitor numbers have pushed some areas to restrict camping, particularly in Lofoten and near popular trailheads, where local rules now override the general freedom. Fire bans are strictly enforced. Cultivated land, gardens and areas near houses are excluded entirely.
