The Bird Island Lookout

Saipan's northeast delivers its postcard on schedule: from the clifftop lookout, Bird Island sits green-capped in its sanctuary bay - a limestone islet ringed by reef turquoise, seabirds trading over the channel and the surf line drawing white around the composition. The rail-and-platform stop serves all lights (morning glass, afternoon glow), the marine-sanctuary status keeps the bay's colours honest, and the adjacent grotto and Banzai coast make the lookout the anchor of every northern loop. Ten minutes suffice; most linger longer. The islet is a bird sanctuary and landing on it is prohibited, so it is seen from the lookout above.

When to go
