Galičica is the limestone ridge separating Lake Ohrid from Lake Prespa, made a national park in 1958, rising to Magaro at 2255 metres with a road running over the pass between the two lakes. Prespa sits around one hundred and fifty metres higher than Ohrid and drains into it through the karst, which is part of why Ohrid stays so clear. The ridge holds endemic plants and a view over both lakes from the top.

What you actually see

  • The two-lake view - Ohrid on one side and Prespa on the other from the ridge.
  • The karst drainage - Prespa water passing underground through the limestone into Ohrid.
  • The endemic plants - species found only on this massif.
  • The ridge road - the route over the pass between the lakes.

When to go

May to October is the season; snow closes the high road in winter. Mornings are clearest for the views. Summer brings traffic from Ohrid.

Honest expectations

The road over the ridge is narrow and winding. Cloud closes the views frequently. Proposed development inside the park has been a long-running controversy.

Nearby

Ohrid is northwest, and Lake Prespa is southeast.
