Getting thereEastern Niger's hub on the Kano road
EntryFree; palace-quarter guiding by courtesy

Zinder was Niger's first capital and remains its most architectural city: the old Birni quarter winds between Hausa houses whose facades carry moulded relief and painted geometry - the region's celebrated decorative tradition at its densest - toward the Sultan's palace, seat of a sultanate that grew rich commanding the Kano-Agadez caravan axis and still holds its ceremonial court. The Grand Mosque rises beside the palace square, the tanners' and leatherworkers' quarters continue trades the caravans priced, and Zinder's markets - Thursday's the great one - pull the eastern Sahel to town as they have for centuries.

What you actually see

  • The Birni facades - moulded, painted Hausa house-fronts.
  • The Sultan's palace - the caravan sultanate's living seat.
  • The Grand Mosque quarter - the spiritual heart by the palace square.
  • The Thursday market - the eastern Sahel trading at volume.

When to go

November to February for cool wandering; Thursday is market day and the city's fullest self. Planning starts from current travel guidance and local arrangements, as throughout the country.

Honest expectations

Be current-conditions-first in planning this region, and travel with trusted local partners who know the picture. In the quarters, guiding courtesies and permission-first photography are the etiquette - facades belong to families, the palace to a living court. Facilities are provincial-simple.

Nearby

The Kano road country and the Damagaram villages.
