Zinder

Zinder was Niger's first capital and remains its most architectural city: the old Birni quarter winds between Hausa houses whose facades carry moulded relief and painted geometry - the region's celebrated decorative tradition at its densest - toward the Sultan's palace, seat of a sultanate that grew rich commanding the Kano-Agadez caravan axis and still holds its ceremonial court. The Grand Mosque stood beside the palace square until it collapsed in heavy rains in September 2024, the tanners' and leatherworkers' quarters continue trades the caravans priced, and Zinder's markets - Thursday's the great one - pull the eastern Sahel to town as they have for centuries.

History

Zinder began as the small Hausa village of Zengou and grew after Kanuri aristocrats arrived in 1736, built the fortified quarter of Birni and made it capital of the Sultanate of Damagaram, a hub of trans-Saharan trade towards Kano and Bornu. The German explorer Heinrich Barth stayed here in 1851, it was the capital of the French colonial territory from 1911 until 1926, and its Grand Mosque, one of Niger's oldest, collapsed in heavy rain in September 2024 (Wikipedia, Zinder).
