Niamey, the capital of Niger, spreads along the banks of the great Niger river in the southwest of the country, a relaxed and characterful Sahel city. Its life centres on the mighty river, best enjoyed from the bridges or a pirogue at sunset, and on its lively markets, above all the Grand Marché, brimming with textiles, crafts, silver and produce. The excellent National Museum, set in green grounds, showcases the country's rich cultures, crafts and even dinosaur fossils from the Sahara. History
In the 16th century the villages of Goudel and Gamkalé were founded on the left bank, and the site of Niamey lay between them; other villages of Hausa, Zarma, Songhai and Fula people grew up around it by the early 19th century. Captain Henri Salaman set up a French post here in 1901 and was the first to call the cluster of villages Niamey, which became the territorial capital from 1903 to 1911 and again from 1926 (Wikipedia, Niamey).
