Balleyara

Balleyara holds one of the largest markets in Niger on Sundays, and its main business is livestock: cattle, sheep, goats and camels brought in from across the region and traded in pens through the morning, with Fulani, Zarma and Tuareg herders all working the same ground. Grain, cloth, salt and household goods fill the rest of the site. It empties again by afternoon. The market draws traders from as far as the Nigerian border, and animals bought here move on south in herds.

When to go

Sunday morning only; the site is empty the rest of the week. November to February is the cool season. Trading is heaviest before the midday heat.

Honest expectations

It only happens on Sunday and starts very early. There are no facilities for visitors and it is dusty and crowded. Photography of people needs asking first.
