Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge

Los Guatuzos runs along the southern shore of Lake Nicaragua toward the Costa Rican border, a mosaic of swamp forest, rivers and seasonally flooded land protected since 1990 and listed as a Ramsar wetland. It is one of the best places in the country for wildlife on a small budget: canoe trips up the Papaturro river find spectacled caimans, howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, turtles and a very long bird list, and night trips with a torch pick out caiman eyes and frogs. A biological station at Papaturro provides simple accommodation, guiding and an orchid collection, and communities in the refuge run homestays. Boats from San Carlos are infrequent, which shapes any visit.

When to go

December to April for drier travel, though water levels in the rains open more channels to canoes. Bird numbers are highest from December to March with northern migrants. Boats from San Carlos run on a limited schedule.

What to expect

Getting there takes two hours by boat on an infrequent service, so plans have to fit the timetable. Accommodation is basic with limited power. Mosquitoes are severe. Spanish is effectively necessary. Larger mammals are rarely seen.
