The Phoenix Astronomical Society built this between 2003 and 2005 and is careful about what it is: not a replica of Salisbury Plain but a henge of the same scale designed to work at this latitude, in this hemisphere, under these stars. The stones - concrete over a steel frame rather than sarsen - mark the solstices and equinoxes, the rising points of significant stars, and an analemma that tells solar time. The interpretation deliberately layers three astronomical traditions: European, Polynesian navigation with its star paths, and Babylonian and Egyptian sky-reckoning. The guided tour is essential, because unguided it is a circle of concrete uprights in a paddock and almost none of the meaning is visible. Tours run at set times and outside those the site is often closed, so it cannot be visited on impulse.

What you actually see

  • The henge - full scale, recalculated for southern latitudes.
  • The solar analemma - the marker that tells solar time.
  • The star alignments - European, Polynesian and ancient Near Eastern traditions.
  • The Wairarapa setting - farmland and hills all around.

When to go

Any season. Tours run at fixed times and the site is otherwise usually locked - check the schedule and book. Solstice and equinox events fill early.

Honest expectations

Without the guide it is concrete posts in a field; the tour is the attraction. It is a modern build, not an ancient monument, and does not pretend otherwise. Fully exposed in wind and rain.

Nearby

Carterton and Greytown are close; Masterton is north.
