Bannockburn Sluicings

From the 1860s miners at Bannockburn brought water across the hills in long races and turned high-pressure jets on the gravel terraces, washing entire hillsides through sluice boxes to recover the gold. The result is not a mine site so much as a rearranged landscape: pale cliffs of exposed gravel, deep gullies cut by water rather than rivers, tunnels driven to reach buried wash, and mounds of picked-over tailings across the slopes. Between them stand the stone wall stumps of miners' huts and the survivors of orchards planted by families who stayed on. Marked tracks loop through the whole area, with panels explaining the water races that made the work possible.

What you actually see

• The sluiced cliffs - pale gravel faces cut back by water jets rather than weather.
• Tunnels and races - hand-driven adits and the channels that carried water across the hills.
• Stewart Town - stone hut walls and old fruit trees left by miners who settled here.
• The tailings - long mounds of washed and picked-over gravel across the slopes.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the sensible seasons. Central Otago summers are hot and dry with no shade anywhere on the site, so a midsummer visit means starting early or waiting until evening. Wild thyme flowers purple across the hills in November and smells strongly in the heat. Winter is cold but clear, and the low sun shows the sluiced faces well.

Honest expectations

There is no shade at all, and the exposure is the main hazard on a hot day; carry more water than feels necessary. The tracks are loose gravel underfoot and the tunnels are low and unlit. Navigation takes attention because the terrain repeats itself and the marked routes are easy to lose. Without the interpretation panels the whole place can read as an abandoned quarry rather than a worked goldfield.
