Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve

The Mackenzie Basin is a dry inland bowl of tussock and glacial lakes, and it is dark. Tekapo has controlled its outdoor lighting since the early 1980s to protect the observatory on Mount John above the town, and in 2012 the basin and Aoraki Mount Cook National Park were together recognised as an international dark sky reserve, one of a small number worldwide. On a clear moonless night you get the southern sky at close to full strength: the Milky Way core overhead in winter, the Magellanic Clouds as two faint smudges of neighbouring galaxies, the Southern Cross, and satellites crossing constantly. Guided tours run telescopes at the Mount John summit and from sites along the lakeshore.

• Mount John summit - the observatory domes above the town, reached at night on booked tours only.
• The southern sky - the Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross and the Milky Way core.
• Lake Tekapo shoreline - open water and low horizons for wide-sky viewing without a tour.
• The basin by day - tussock flats, turquoise glacial lakes and the Southern Alps along the western edge.

When to go

Winter nights are longest and clearest as well as coldest, with hard frosts from April onwards. Check the moon phase first, because a full moon washes out everything faint and tours still run. Book well ahead in summer and allow a spare night in case cloud closes in. In December full dark does not arrive until close to eleven.

Honest expectations

Tours are expensive for two hours in the cold, and cloud cancels them at short notice with a refund or a reschedule you may not have time for. The summit road is closed to private cars at night, so going without a tour means finding a lakeside pull-off and bringing your own warm clothes. Tekapo is small, crowded in summer and short on affordable beds.

Nearby

Lake Pukaki and the road to Aoraki Mount Cook run west, and the Church of the Good Shepherd sits on the Tekapo shore.
