Pieterburen

Pieterburen is a small village behind the Wadden dyke with two things. The seal centre was founded in 1971 by Lenie 't Hart, who began taking in sick and orphaned harbour seals when the Wadden population had collapsed to a few hundred; it grew into a large rehabilitation and research operation, and its role has been argued over - the population recovered and critics questioned whether taking in healthy pups helped or hindered, so the centre has narrowed its intake and now emphasises research and release. Pieterburen is also the classic starting point for wadlopen, walking out across the exposed mudflats at low tide to a Wadden island or a sandbank and back or by boat - which is done only with a licensed guide, takes several hours in thigh-deep mud and water, and is genuinely dangerous alone, because the tide comes in faster than anyone can walk.

History

Around 1300 a dike was built north of the present village, and in the 14th century a settlement grew up on a mudflat of the river Hunze. It is first mentioned in 1371 as Sancti Petri, when the church was built, and the name means "the neighbourhood near Saint Peter" (Wikipedia, Pieterburen).

Before you go

Do not walk onto the mudflats without a licensed guide - the tide fills the channels faster than you can walk. Walks are booked, physically hard and cancelled for weather. The seal centre is not a zoo.
