Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Kanchenjunga stands at 8,586 metres on the border with Sikkim, the third-highest mountain in the world, and the trek to its base camps is among the longest and least travelled in Nepal: three weeks or more from Taplejung, either to the north base camp at Pangpema below the Kanchenjunga glacier, or to the south at Oktang, or both linked by a high pass. The route climbs from subtropical valleys through Limbu and Rai villages, then Sherpa and Tibetan-influenced settlements higher up, into rhododendron forest and finally onto moraine. It is a restricted area requiring permits, a guide and at least two trekkers. Lodges exist but are sparse and basic, and some sections still need camping or careful planning.

What to look for

• Pangpema - the north base camp below the Kanchenjunga glacier.
• Oktang - the southern approach and its view of the massif.
• Village sequence - Limbu and Rai low down, Sherpa and Tibetan above.
• Rhododendron forest - the middle sections in spring flower.

When to go

October to November and April to May. This corner of Nepal catches more weather than the west and conditions are less reliable. Winter closes the high routes and monsoon is impassable.

Before you go

This is a serious three-week commitment in a remote area with limited rescue. Permits, a guide and a minimum group are required. Lodges are sparse and some nights may need camping. Access to Taplejung involves a flight and a long road journey, both weather-dependent.
